I am about to change the gearbox oil on Evinrude 40hp 1984, should I use normal oil or go for semi-synthetic/ fully synthetic, I know that going down this road on older cars can be fatal and ruin them within a short space of time, what is the correct way to go, again advise/ help much appreciated, JBD.

personally I would use actual "lower unit gear lube" that you can find at most auto stores and any marine supply store. Although being that the engine isnt electric shift, it might be ok to use other engine oils. I can't honestly give you that particular advise, but maybe one of the experts around here could advise you on whether or not regular engine oil can be substituted for "lower unit gear lube"

Engine oil is an absolute "no-no" in a lower unit. Use the recommended gear case oil available at any store that sells marine lubricants. It doesn't matter if you use synthetic or regular gearcase oil.

again thank you, I noted on site that some people were using synthetics, but I suppose considering the age of engine etc just use the recommended oil, many thanks JBD
