I'm going through the process of resealing the gearbox on my 1962 28hp outboard and have a couple of questions .

1- Can I use Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket Sealant Liquid - No. 3 to seal the gearbox .I can only get 3M 847 in a large can at a cost of $65 .The Permatex comes in a small container at a price of $7

2-When replacing prop shaft seal and shift bush do you put gasket sealant on the outside of them to get a water tight seal?

3-Whats the best way to line up the pivot pin (before or after screwing gearbox together). Also what’s stops the pivot pin from leaking. Is there a rubber seal or washer that you replace?

4-Are the Sierra seal kits alright or should I buy genuine Omc parts

Regards Kevin

Re: Gearbox Reseal Questions

Question #1; Permatex is fine
#2; can if you want to, not neccessary but it won't hurt to do it
#3; before it's put back together
#4: Sierra parts are ok

Thanks oldcatamount
Regarding Q2 is a press fit enough to stop water entering gearbox as there is no actual seal on the outside of either parts?

Re: Gearbox Reseal Questions

I'd put some sealant on the OD of the seals. But not the SR bushing.

#3....If you have the upper gearcase upside down (you do have a "pickle fork", right?), and the gears & stuff in place, and in forward gear, you can go ahead and install the skeg and the pivot pin should be very close to being in alignment. That's how I do 'em.

Agree with post #4 ---nothing to it if done that way.

3M 847 always came in a tube. Have you checked with a BRP Dlr to see if they make it in smaller quantities ??

Part number 7509A65 at McMaster-Carr for a 5 oz tube. $17.08. Enough to last a long, long time for most people.

..........iboats marketing dept---are you carrying this product? Maybe you should so we don't have to send your customers somewhere else.
