Hey all , great site you have here . I'm new to boating and this site so bear with me as I'm sure I will ask some pretty dumb questions from time to time .
Dumb question # 1
I just bought a used bassboat with an Evinrude 150 Intruder on it . 1998 model. The guy I got it from said he hadn't changed the gearcase grease in quite a while so I thought I would . I go to the local boat shop that does repairs also , and they tell me to use ( what they sell ) Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube . It says it's made for Mercury and all outboard lower units except OMC electric shift gearcases . Is it O.K. to use this ? And how can I tell if I have an electric shift gearcase ? It looks like it shifts by a cable to me . Thanks in advance for the info and I hope I can contribute to the sight in the future . Chuck

The "Electric and Hydro Electric" shift systems existed only between 1962 and 1972. Your system is a mechanical shift unit.

I'll bow to someone elses expertise to quote on the Mercury lubricant being used in a Evinrude engine.

Yes, that gearcase oil would be fine. The trick is to change the gear lube every season, not "in a long time". Look for signs of water intrusion (milky, coffee-colored oil) or metal shavings when you do it. Use new plastic washers on the drain & fill plugs. You should definately change the waterpump impeller too. That should be done every three, four years. They get old and stiff and are subject to failure over time. Get a manual and go through all the linkages & pivots and other moving parts that need lubrication, too. If the guy didn't change the lower unit lube every year he's not a big believer in lubrication or preventive maintenance. You should be, though. Follow the maintenance intervals in the manual.

Re: Gearcase Grease ???

Thanks for the great info and advice . I am a preventive maintenance nut on all of my vehicles and equipment and I want to go thru this thoroughly and get it up to " well maintained " shape , but being a newcomer to boating , I need a really good manual to show me the way . It's a 1998 150 H.P. Evinrude Intruder . Which manual would you get , and where can it be bought ( online preferably ) ? Thanks again for all the help . Chuck :D

There is a warning on the Mercury lub that indicates it is not to be mixed with other lubricants so make sure the gearcase is fully drained before adding the new lub.

Re: Gearcase Grease ???

I just last night added the Quicksilver premium gear grease to my Johnson 60 horse lower unit. Its good stuff, and yes quicksilver products are usually used for Mercury. But lower unit grease can be versatile as long as it is not mixed with different kinds. I have found that the quicksilver grease has worked well.

Re: Gearcase Grease ???

Thanks everyone . Very good information . Ken Cook seems to only go from 1996 and back in years . I have a 1997 or 98 so I emailed them to see if they can provide one . If not , I will try the other sources listed . My motor didn't come with a title , is there a way to tell for sure what year it is ? Numbers or something ? Thanks again . Chuck
