Hi,

I'm a newbee attempting to overhaul the gearcase and waterpump on my 1956 Evinrude 15HP... my latest challenge is the gearcase head seal.

I've pulled out the gearcase head, and without really knowing what I'm supposed to do, started banging away at the seal at one end to remove it. There seems to be a brass cover set into the body, which is folded around the seal part to hold it in. I've torn back the brass, and am unsuccessfully banging away to try to pull both parts out.

First, is this at all what I'm supposed to be doing? If so, how? If not, have I destroyed this an need a new one? Thanks for any advice,

--Jon

Best for this is to get both a shop and parts manual. It will give you diagrams and procedures.

I have a Clymer manual, but it doesn't go into this level of detail...
