Gearcase help, Please!

I have a 1985 200hp OMC sea drive. I am in the process of tearing my gearcase down after I pulled the drive shaft out of it, due to a crankshaft/driveshaft marriage. I am trying to replace the driveshaft retainer and any other parts that may have been damaged during my removal process as well as looking for any pieces that may have broke loose.
Currently, the upper drive shaft is out, the reverse gear is out, the pinion locknut is off and the prop shaft is still in. The manual tells me to remove the pinion gear, but the gear does not want to come loose. Is it suppose to just slide off the lower drive shaft (two piece driveshaft)? I'm affraid to stick anything inside the gearcase to pry with for fear of damaging the side walls. Is there an easy way to get the gear out or am I in for a battle? Or am I just overlooking something, hopefully!
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Steve

Sdutt..... Insert a good size screwdriver between the clutch shifter dog and the driveshaft threads. Use a screwdriver that will take up all of the space there if possible. Hold the screwdriver steady, then give the propshaft a sharp hit upwards with a mallet. That will break the tightness between the pinion gear and the driveshaft taper. You can then lift the driveshaft upwards and out, freeing the pinion gear.

Did you remove the waterpump and the gear case upper bearing housing?

Clanton, the waterpump and bearing housing was removed, I forgot to mention that.

Mr. Reeves you've helped again, after a couple wacks with the mallet the job was done. BUT, after removing the pinion gear I found a tooth that had a small chip in it, Bummer!

Anyway, this is my first time this far back into a gearcase. Is there anything specific I should be looking for while I have it tore apart? Any tricks I might need to know about before reassembly?
Also what type of cleaner would be best to clean it up inside?
As I said before I have a manual, but that dosn't take the place of experience.

Steve

Sdutt.... Just look for anything chipped, rusted, pitted, bearings burnt blue, that sort of thing. Anything that's out of the ordinary. Sorry to hear about the tooth chipped pinion as, if memory serves me correctly, the pinion and forward gear comes as a set ($$$$$) .

Yes Mr. Reeves, all I can find is the pinion/forward gear set. And yes $$$$ is right!

Would you, or anyone else, know what year lower units are interchangeable with my 1985 OMC 200hp sea drive? I found a couple V6 lower units for sale. Just not sure if they will fit.

One is a 1979 175hp, owner says it has been pressure and vacuum tested.

The other is a “Johnson - Evenrude V-6 outboard 20 in. shaft” that supposedly has never been run. owner says it will fit 80's thru 90's with proper shift shaft.

Am I right to assume that Johnson, Evenrude and OMC are all interchangeable and that all V6's, for their respective year/years are also interchangeable?

The reason I am looking at different gear cases is, mine has a big chunk missing from the left cavitation plate (drives me nuts to see it) and I had a low speed vibration when I put it in gear, even with a new prop. Not sure if the vibration had anything to do with the driveshaft getting married to crankshaft but I'm not too confident about it (the vibration) going away after I replace the gears.

Steve

You could talk to Capt Ken at Nelson Marine over by the Navy Station toward the beach. There is a independent mechanic on hiway 390 in Lynn Haven that may have something. Do not know anything about the guy on 390. What you have to watch on the gearcases is the gear ratio.

Make sure that your SeaDrive dosent use the extra large gearcase found on the v8 outboards. I believe that the big seadrives did use this g-case, along with the commercial engines, and the early lower unit for the clutch-dog style king cobra I/O's were based on this larger heavier duty unit.
