Gearcase Lube Green & Whitish?

'82 Johnson 115 V-4. Went to change lower unit lube. Came out a sort of greenish color and a little milky. How concerned should I be? Do I need the lower unit seals replaced and approximately how much would that cost?

Personally, I would drain the fluid and add new. Also be sure to replace o rings on the top and bottom plugs since water can intrude there.

Give it a few hours, and drain a bit out to see if water has gotten back in. If so, you're probably looking at seals.

Mlky = water. What you do about it is up to you. I would get the LU pressure and vacuum tested to find where the leak is. Four choices besides a cracked LU housing: drain/vent screws, prop shaft (two seals there), drive shaft and shift shaft. Water is not good for the metal parts.

Cost is dependent on local labor rates, but I would guess ~ 2.5 hours plus parts ... say ~ $350 =/-.
