Hi,

I have a 1979 Johnson 100hp outboard motor. Can someone tell me how I would go about draining and replacing the lubricant in the gearcase on this motor?

Thanks,

Larry

first of all make sure you get the proper lube, it will be different for auto or manual. Take out the bottom set screw (large flat) along with the top screw and drain. check for metal filings on bottom screw, it will have a magnet on it that will trap filings, clean thoroughally. squeeze new fluid in from bottom until it comes out the top, install top set screw to create a vaccuum then quickly put in bottom one. Hope this helps, gl

Make sure you are removing the proper screws. The drain is at the bottom of the gearcase (obviously it must be if it must drain). You need to get down and look. Can't tell you how many people take out screws in the middle of the lower unit and can't imagine why no oil comes out.
