I changed the lower unit oil on my motor and the oil was a white milky substance. I removed the lower unit, submerged it and performed a pressure check at around 6 psi, the only bubbles I got were from the gasket around the impeller housing. Since there has been water intrusion, do I need to pull out the gearcase, and completley reseal? Or would I be ok just getting new seals for the shift rod and drive shaft housing? i didnt get any bubbles around the prop shaft seal. Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

The trouble is that the seals on both the prop shaft and the drive shaft are both double, two seals fitted back to back so that one keeps the oil in while the other keeps the water out. Consequently it is possible for the inner seal to be holding up when pressure tested but for the outer one to still allow water in.

Having gone to the trouble of removing the lower unit it is probably sensible buy the kits to replace all the seals and O rings etc and the pump impeller.

This is also the time to replace the anode on the prop shaft seal and bearing carrier.

Note carefully the position of all the little O rings in water pump. Questions on here indicate that people often get them reassembled wrongly.

I only saw 1 O ring between the impeller and the impeller housing plate I think that is what its called. That thin aluminum plate that the impeller housing sits on.

The diagram HERE shows one in the housing above the cup as well. The troubles start when people put the one that should be below the impeller above it or put one between the cup and the housing when there shouldn't or try to put both in with the impeller.

These exploded parts diagrams may not be a substitute for a manual but they do help to get the right things together in the right places.
