1992 Johnson, Model J25teend
Gearcase separates about 6" from powerhead and stops. Will not come out any further. Upper and lower shift rod has been disconnected. Is there a shift rod connector screw in the exhaust area that must be taken out (like the 28hp) or is it something else?

Hey runner....When you disconnected the shift rod at the lower unit, did you remove the intake screens and take the shift rod apart there? When you take the connectors apart, there is a keeper you have to remove to take the upper connector of the shift rod or you won't be able to drop the lower unit.

hello
yep what OBJ says. once you seperate the two 1/2 hex fittings you must raise the upper one and remove the "dangit" clip. make a note of the tapered direction. write it down. once that is removed your home free.
good luck and keep posting

And if ya' are wonderin why it's called a "dangit" clip, it's because it always breaks when you try to take it off.

Removing the "dangit clip" solved the problem. In fact, I broke the dangit clip getting it off, dangit. I went back through the service manual and nothing was said about removing the clip. Anyway, thanks for the help.
