Happy New Boating Year to all of you!I want to know will there be any problem moving the intestines of an 86 alpha lower unit into a 78 I believe #1 gear housing.I know that the units interchange as assemblies, but want to be sure that the older gearhousing will accept the later stuffing.Thank you!

Re: Gearhousing swap question

They are not interchangeable. There are different bearing sizes and all sorts of problems. Even if they were the same vintage, they would have to be reshimmed using special tools that cost more than a new lower unit.

Thank you Don!I have the shimming tools and have a good connection to bearing shop. Are the shimming tools the same that are used for the upper unit gears?I simply can`t find an alpha one gear housing here in Bulgaria at a reasonable price...

Re: Gearhousing swap question

The tools used for the upper are not the same ones used for the lower. To be quite honest, I don't think using any of the internal parts of the 1 drives are compatable with the alpha parts. I have never tried, I know there are differences and always order the correct parts for the job.

Re: Gearhousing swap question

Just as an example the '86 lower uses a 'non-preload' drive shaft and the driveshaft bearing is installed the opposite way to the 1 drive. The gears (Forward, reverse and pinion) are cut the opposite way too. The simple answer is 'the internals from an Alpha One can not be fitted into a 1-drive housing'.....
