gears grind when shift to reverse

When I shift to reverse, boat moving forward, the gears grind slightly. Is this normal? New 50 HP 4 stroke

A slight grinding or crunch is normal when selecting gears. Don't try and select slowly due to the dog clutch set up. If it continues once you are in reverse it is most likely the gear linkages are out of adjustment. This should be a 5 minite adjustment from your dealer

I agree that it sounds like you are sliding it into reverse. This technique will kill the clutch dogs. Snap it into forward or reverse. If this technique still causes the ratcheting noise you hear, then an adjustment is probably needed.

YES!!
You are still moving forward and your prop is rotating in that direction. When you put it in reverse you are forcing it to go in the other direction. If you keep doing this you will strip the shift dog which is brass. You might have brass in your oil now so don't be suprised when you change the lower unit oil.

Makes sense. Thanks.
I just changed the oil in the lower unit (10 hour oil change) and did see some small metal shavings but they were silver colored. I'm going to change the lower unit oil again in 10 or 15 hours to see if there are more. If so back to the dealer...
Thanks again.

Fortunately I've only shifted into reverse a few times so if any damage it will be minimal...
