Re: Gears slipping in reverse - how to adjust?
First thing you could do is disconnect the shift cable from the shift arm and see if it will shift manually at the engine by using the shift arm.If so ,the shift cable trunion is out of adjustment, the cable is faulty,or the control/shift lever box is the culprit.
Assuming that the engine will shift fine by using the shift arm with the cable disconnected, you can adjust the cable as follows. With the engine not running, place the shift arm in the neutral position. Then place the shift lever/controls in the neutal position.Note whether the hole in the shift cable and the shift arm are exactly aligned. If not adjust the cable trunion until they are and reinsert the bolt coupling the shift cable to the shift arm. Then check for proper operation. If this procedure won't correct your issue ,something else is amiss.Shift cable worn out, clutch dawg in lower unit and possibly reverse gear lobes worn down,or linkage problem within the controls.
Not knowing how or when this issue arose and whether the lower unit was recently removed for service before this issue arose, another possibility is if the shift rod has been rotated from its original length position. If this isn't the case then disregard this possibility.
