96 Bravo 3 single gearshift I was cruising down the river, needed fuel . Pulled up to the pump for fuel put it in neutral shut it off . Restarted motor, unable to put in forward gear. I was able to put it in reverse, after 3 or 4 times in reverse and back to neutral I was able to put in forward gear. Whats going on ?

Re: gearshift problem ?

Did you use the "throttle only" when you restarted?
The "shift linkage & arm" assembly in the driveshaft hsg may be corroding. And the shift cable may need replacing!

Why wouldn't it go into gear? Too hard to push, or was it sticking in the neutral only position.

Re: gearshift problem ?

I only asked about the "throttle only" wondering if it in fact did pop out again.
Couple things to have looked at. #1, The detent ball assembly on some give up. In turn the ball puts an exccesive amount of pressure on the shift link arm. #2, moisture has been in there too long & anything that moves is rusty.

Disconnect the shift cable (from control) at the shift plate. If it moves free, you have an issue with the intermediate shift & back. Being a '96 get it all looked at.
