Are gel coat blisters on the bottom of a boat always visible to the eye? If not, how can they be detected? Thanks.

Re: Gel Coat Blisters

They are very common on fiberglass boats that are left in the water for extended periods. Basically, if you dont see them, they are not there or are too deep to be of any problem. Its sometimes poor workmanship in that the first layer of glass isnt rolled properly eliminating the bubbles in the first place.

They can be detected by 'tapping out' the hull. If you know what to listen for you can hear a 'loose' or 'flappy' sound when the area is tapped. If the boat has sat out of the water for an extended period blisters can shrink and even disappear until the hull is submerged again. It's for the most part a cosmetic issue. 'Google' it and get more info than you'll ever need.
