Gel coat respray, How do I do the stripe?

I decided to make a new thread for this because after much searching I cannot find the answer I'm looking for
I'm preparing to do a full respray on my hull this upcoming weekend. I would like to have a blue stripe down the side the same as in the picture, except not in glitter.

Do I do the blue first and then mask off and spray white? Or white then blue?

I am also concerned about the hard line that will be formed by masking off the top of edge of stripe. The bottom wont be an issue because it will be hidden. Would it be better to use the soft edge foam tape and then use a vinyl pinstripe to hide the "seam"? Or is their a simpler method to accomplish this?

As always thank you for any input you may have.

Yatch Dr has stated in some threads about this..
I am no expert at this, but I believe he said you would tape off the bule stripe and shoot the gel and let it setup and then remove the
tape and go back and shoot the white letting the white cover some of the bule..

Shoot the PVA and let it cure.. After removing the PVA with warm water start to sand down the gel.. As you sand down the white thats over the blue gel it will cut a nice line without the hard edge..

Yatch Dr can tell you in much more detail how this is done.. He is the expert on this work..

Okies.. Im back ..

RWB .. you can do many things with gel that you can not do with paint :) .

What you want is an Inlaid stripe and Inlaid name With Gel ..

No problem.

Im going to give you and Iboats a Trick of the trade with Gel inlays ..

1. Prep everything for gel ( 80-120 ).
2. Acetone Wipe All surfaces to be gelled.
3. Fine line stripes/mask and/or Stencil your graphics.
4. Spray your large surface ( white in this case ) on your hull.
5. When the primary coat starts to gel .. then remove your second color coat masking.
6. Apply the second color coat with gel ( You Do NOT mask off the second color stripe .. overspray right on top of your Primary coat ( your going to sand that down to the inlay ).
7. Rinse and repeat for your Stencils ( Remove the stencils as soon as possible from your primary coat as long as its not too close to your secondary ( if your Stencils are too close to your secondary spray .. double up on the fine line tape and pull them off as soon as your secondary gels)). Spray the Third color ( overspary as least as you can ).

8. Wet/Dry sand Until the Lines come sharp .. 400g is used to final sharp sand your inlay sanding..

9. Final sand and buff..

You can have a very nice inlay gel job with this method :) ..

Questions will be answered.

So what do you want to know ?

You shoot the first Main coat ... then unmask the stripe .. then shoot/gel it ..then sand everything at one time.

The overspray on your boot or accent stripe is irrelivant at this point .. you will have to sand/buff it to finish.

Inlayed stripes are not that hard in the gel coat field .. its when you get to Painting when it becomes a Pain.

I'm pretty sure your previous post that I found answers my question, I guess I just overthought it a bit.

I Hope to get it gelled this weekend, I'll post back with the finished(before and after sanding) just incase some one comes across this at a later date. Maybe the pics will help. I'll have a slightly more detailed description and more pictures in my rebuild thread in my sig.

IMG_4747.JPG Thanks for starting this thread and all who have contributed. I'm planning a re-gel on the blue boat in the pic. My next project.

Re: Gel coat respray, How do I do the stripe?

Well my stripe is masked, pigment mixed to my liking for stripe color and fiddled with the gun to get a feel for everything.

I'm in the middle of double checking that I have everything I needed and then it dawned on me.

When do i spray the PVA?

I'm thinking I have to unmask the stripe then spray PVA, let it cure overnight wash off and then spray stripe and PVA over that. Does that sound even close?

I'm no pro, but I would think the PVA is the last coat...so the last thing you would do...

PVA is Last .. dont do it untill all coats are on ( I assumed you would be doing this at one shot/day ).

If you missed the window of PVA then just continue to the stripe without PVA. Then PVA after all coats are on.

I hope you had Good gel to do this ...

^that is what i planned on doing.

Being extremely worried about missing my window for PVA and after probably over reading about the negatives that can come of applying to late, I didn't spray the stripe.

So now I'm left with a white hull and no stripe. So i assume from here i just continue on with the process and spray my stripe and pva over that and call it a day. Right?

And what do you mean by good gel? I'm using the stuff from Us composites

As long as you didnt sand on your white .. then the overspray is just a 'guide coat' for an inlay strip.

If this is correct .. then you spray your stripe and then sand until you get a razor sharp edge on your lines :) ..

Yes you have good Gel .. no worries there.

Nope, didnt sand anything. I just washed the PVA off the white, rewiped with acetone and shot the stripe. I was worried about jacking this up, but it's good to know it'll be alright.
