Go to the restoration section and post some photos, someone there will have been there and done that.
I can say that sometimes when the oxidation is heavy enough you need to start out with wet sanding, maybe all the way down to 800 grit or so if it's heavily oxidized, then work your way up to about 2000 before moving on to buffing compounds. And sometimes it's so bad that there's no bringing it back.
