Gel question?

I have accumulated some scratches, more like gouge's in the gel coat over the years. I have a vision of filling and taping off the areas, and then spraying gel coat with a compressor driven air brush that I found at Harbor Freight. They are really cheap, like $10, but I would throw it away anyhow. Will this work or do you think that the gel will be too thick? I can thin it out but can I thin it out enough?

If there is one thing I came to realize about myself is that I have no, I repeat NO artistic talent whatsoever. I struggled to paint my mailbox.

Thanks in advance.........

PS, how long will gel last on the shelf. I bought gel and a color matching kit about 5 years ago and never opened it for a previous project.

Someone here did it with a harbor freight gun; I think it was Haute. They said they had to thin it alot.

It will be difficult to use that small spray gun for gel coat, it's made for thin paint and then only for spraying very small areas. You can get a larger gun at H/F for only a few bucks more that will work for what you want to do.

The repair kit you bought is most likely no good now, gel coat and catayst have a shelf life of much less than 5 years.

Re: Gel question?

If the area isn't too big, just fill in with gel coat and a putty knife. Sand down, might have to recoat a few minor areas, sand again and get down to 600 grit, then polish it all out. Color match is gonna be the worst issue IMHO.
