Just a quick question. Is there any other product that would replace the "OMC gel seal" that the manual calls for when reassembling the crankcase on a rebuild. I have some high temp RTV seal on hand but thats about it. I have a '80 Johnson 115.

Thanks for the time

Re: Gel Seal?

RH..... No, not unless you want to do the job twice. Gel Seal can be obtained at any reliable automotive parts or tool type store.

Re: Gel Seal?

Thanks Joe for the advice. I kind of already knew the answer, but was hoping. I don't know if I'll have any luck finding it today with everything closed. God bless those vets though!

Is there any particular brand that is favored for marine use? I've seen guys use Permatex for autos.

Re: Gel Seal?

RH..... Gel Seal seals with the absence of air. I've experimented with various substances and all have failed.

Permatex is only mentioned once by OMC to my knowledge and that was many years ago. It was recommended that black permatex be used on the gasket that it used to seal the exhaust tuning tube on the old 40hp models that existed between 1960 through the early 1970s. Haven't seen it mentioned since. Tells me something (grin).

Thanks Joe.

I hate to be a bug about this, but are you saying that you only recomend "OMC" gel seal or is there another product out there that is comparible? If so, what is the name and can I get it at my local auto box store?

Thanks

Re: Gel Seal?

RH..... Murdock is quite correct. I should have mentioned that. Matter of fact, that (Loctite 518) is what I have been using lately.
