Strong winds + a tight slip and I ended up with about a quarter size ding in my gelcoat. I live in a smaller town and cannot find anyone who will work on fiberglass. Talked to a big city repair guy who said I could fix it myself using a color-matched Spectrum Colors patch and paste kit. Anybody have any experience with this stuff? Any other brands that are good? I've never done any body work, so I'm not real excited about diving into this...but, it might be something that I need to get good at (hopefully not). I appreciate any and all advice.

Re: Gelcoat ding repair

The gelcoat repair kits work well... I know from experience! The toughest part is matching the color, the insturctions are clear and from there I'd recommend;
-take only what you need out and save the rest...(oops, I wasn't thinking the first time)
-mix the catalyst in very well without causing it to trap bubbles
-apply it carefully but don't get too carried away because it's easier to do 2 applications but make sure there's no air trapped inside
-if you end up with a 'blob' of gelcoat on your hull, don't worry! Put tape around the area and use a half round file to get the lumps off
-I finish mine with 600 wet, then polish
You'll be fine :)

Hugh, What type of boat is it? Some boats have wood superstructures that if dinged, have to be fixed immediately before rot starts.

JAZZ ;)
