Since it's 60* and sunny all week in Buffalo NY, I decided to pull the boat out and take inventory for the coming season, as well as clean her up.
She could really use a full stripping and respraying (what 50 year old boat couldn't?) but seeing as this is a "test-boat" for my wife, that'll wait til next winter.
I have a polisher and "enough" leftover detail supplies, from my summer car that I sold last year, that I feel I should be able to get a nice shine & protective layer on her.
I've done some reading into these "resto kits" and it seems that they are not ideal, so I'm going to stick with the tried & true method. Please tell me if I'm on the wrong path
A good washing
A mild degreasing / stripper / cleaner
Rubbing compound & white (scotchbrite or 3M) pads to cut the gelcoat
A fine cutting polish (I have ) & terry cloth
A fine finishing polish (I have this)
Followed up by a few coats of wax (I have this)
My main question is: Do you think that the "car" wax will be okay for the boat gelcoat finish?
The boat is trailered when not in use, and is only used in freshwater (Lake Erie). Hopefully it'll be an every weekend toy.
Thanks,
Nick
