I have a 6m fibreglass half cab, about mid 80's model, and I have noticed that the gelcoat has worn away where the boat sits on the keel rollers of the trailer. The areas of wear are about 1"x2" in size. Has anybody else experienced this problem and have any suggestions on how to stop this from occurring. Also repairing the gelcoat I was going to clean the area with acetone and then fill with epoxy. Should this be adequate. Thank you in advance.

This link may help you with your repair questions.

http://www.westmarine.com
Once there go down left column and click on West Advisor.Next enter gelcoat repair in search product info database.
-------------------------------------------------
Re trailer:
I personally prefer bunk style trailers as imho they reduce the potential for pressure points by spreading the weight over a larger surface area(cradling the boat). In your case, maybe there are softers rollers available or rollers that have more surface area in contact with the bottom(just a thought). The other possibility is that your boat is not tied down to the trailer well enough and it is able to shift when trailering causing rubbing where the rollers contact the boat(again, just a thought).May I suggest that you also post to the trailer section regarding your trailer issues as you may get more feedback?

Re: Gelcoat wear

Thanks 93Evinrude, I have the boat secured to the trailer using a large strap tied towards the rear and pulled taught using a ratchet system. I do like your idea regarding using softer rollers. I would imagine that as the trailer rubber ages it would become harder and gradually perish. Thanks for your reply.
