Gelcoated hull??

HI all,
I have a question regarding Gelcoat, as i am new to boating and dont really have a clue, i will be depending on your expert advise.

I have just bought a 21ft fishing boat and the hull is not a smooth Gelcoated finish at all. NO fiber's are showing, no dents or weak spots but the whole hull is like a textured/rough finish rather than a smooth finish, is this normal. the hull has never been painted to my knowledge. did they make hulls like this at all? would it be possible for me to sand it down to a smooth finish and then paint it or even paint it straight away without the need for sanding?.

I keep reading about people who resin thier boats before painting them, could somebody please elaborate on this and tell me why they do this and what purpose it serves.

Also, (sorry guy's), my boat has a wooden wheelhouse overlayed with fiberglass, the wood will require me to either re-new it all or completely cover with fiberglass and remove the wood alltogether, is this possible or is it better to stick with fitting new wood.

How can i post a picture on here for help on identifying a boat?

Any Help would be fantastic.

Thanks

Re: Gelcoated hull??

It sounds like this was a wooden boat that was covered in fiberglass at some time, that's why the hull is bumpy too, I think we will need a pic to give more details though. Somebody should be along soon to give you better directions on how to post a pick that I can.

Update:-

Sorry, i must not have made myself clear. the hull is GRP, i asked the question to the guy i bought it off " was it a wooden boat covered with fiberglass" the answer was "no, it is a GRP hull".

So i am asuming it is a GRP hull. the finish on the hul is not bumpy but it is like rough sandpaper but without the sharp points on it. it is very strange. could oxidisation cause something like this? what if anything can i use to go over the hull to smoothen it out.

I have been told that i could brush paint Gel-Coat straight over (after sanding) or Flo-Coat will do the same thing.

Help needed before i do something i will regret?

Thanks

Re: Gelcoated hull??

Sounds like it's very weathered and worn away, before you paint, try sanding and buffing, or the comet method and buffing. It doesn't always work, but it's easier than painting it. Try a small area to see if it works.

Re-gel coating is difficult and takes a long time, so use paint if you can't to shine again.

Could be gel coat that was applied with a roller leaving the orange peel look. Not bad for a utility boat, but not what you want on your sleek cruiser.
Could be fiberglass coated wood like ondarvr said.

Photos would be the best thing for us to help you out.

That's kind of what I thought too, but he says it hasn't been painted before.
