GelSeal How Much to Use

How much GelSeal should I use to seal the crankcase halves? Is a thin layer applied with a brush adequate, or do I lay down a bead of GelSeal? Does the GelSeal need to be applied to both crankcase halves or just one?
As you can see by my questions this is my first time resealing the crankcase halves. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: GelSeal How Much to Use

Have both sides thoroughly clean. I use acetone or laquer thinner. Acetone is my preference

Lay a 1/8" bead on the crankcase side (side containing pistons, crank, etc), then spread that around so that it surrounds all the screw holes.... generally coating the entire surface.

When you bolt the two halves together, that gel is going to ooze out the sides (messy somewhat) but that indicates that you got it all sealed. Scrape the excess off with a good size screwdriver. There are various methods but this works for me.

Thanks Joe, I am resealing the crankcase halves per your advice to my post about the lower crankshaft bearing cap leaking fuel.
