I just got started on a 1956 Wagemaker Wolverine.

I have started to remove all of the hardware, seats, etc. The gemmer steering unit will remove easily from the dash but the wheel itself won?t budge. I could possibly be keyed. There are many cracks in it so it will probably need an epoxy putty restoration if that?s the right route or a replacement.

Do you have any suggestions that you could offer to remove the wheel? I assume the unit will then drop out from behind the dash.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... With both knees firmly pushin' the wheel off, 'n the retainin' nut flush with the shaft,...

One good solid Wack with a BFHammer is usually enough to Pop the wheel off,....

Re: Gemmer Steering Wheel Removal

This is from the thread of:

Re: '61 Crestliner Arabian Deluxe resto
If the steering wheel has two drilled screw holes next to the large nut a steering wheel puller could be used. Don't know if you tried a two jaw gear puller. My wheel did not have the drilled screw holes, so I had to use the gear puller. It luckily had slots next to the nut, after removing nut placed gear puller in slots and centered on shaft and the wheel popped off.

The steering wheel cover should be held on by two screws on the backside of the wheel. But some don't have any but use clips or snap posts/poles style. Mine had the snap posts/poles.

After the wheel was removed it had a square key for alignment, don't lose that key or you'll have to go to the hardware store to find another.

Good luck and keep going.

Looks to me like you have enough room under the wheel to put a pry bar....put that Acorn nut back on snug then back it off a turn...put your prybar between the collar and the wheel and put some pressure on it..then like Bondo said get a BFH and give it a whack!

Just like popping a fly wheel off a lawnmower engine...

tried the first solution earlier after reading the other threads, put the acorn nut on and wacked it while pulling the wheel up, nothing- I'll try the pry bar from the rear, thanks
