Gen II gear oil

I noticed some gear oil coming from the vent on my Merc Gen II Alpha One. I also noticed there is a reservoir in the boat next to the engine for gear oil. Is the Gen II outdrive a sealed unit or does it hook to a reservoir? Is it normal to have gear oil coming from the vent hole on the side of the outdrive? Thanks.

Is the seal generally in the upper or lower unit? How much work is involved?

What seals would generally be replaced and is the leak generally in the upper or lower half?

Can someone provide a step by step guide to changing these seals? Perhaps a link to a certain section of a manual.
