I will admit that I am completely new to boating still after 2 summers of owning. I have changed the oil about 5 times by self, drained and fogged each winter on my own, re-upholstered, added a cd player and speakers, and also changed lower unit oil a few times (the wrong way i think).

The oil is easy enough, the draining and antifreeze as well. now comes the lower unit.

boat is an 85 bayliner capri with a 305 I/O and the wonderful OMC outdrive. I have seen talk of cobras and 800 series, but I don't see any numbers on mine. A local guy back home who has owned boats helped me the first round and the winterizing and oil stuff he was a big help on. We did however just take out the top and bottom screws of the lower unit to drain it. then we started pumping like crazy until it got up tothe upper dipstick. after reading on here, i see where I should be using the middle hole possibly as an indicator as to being full??

could someone please help with the proper procedure for my changing the lower unit oil?

next question, is on the other side of the outdrive, there is a squarish box of somesort with oil level or something on it. the guy b4 said just to leave it alone and not worry about it. 3rd season coming up and I want to know more.

This is the same for the oil plug up on the top side of the outdrive on the hull. what is this for??

how hard is it to lubricate the steering and throttle?? what else do i need to have done to keep me on the water. i'm thinking plugs, wires, and points this spring. should i be having anything else on the lower unit serviced??

i don't want to spend a ton as i jsut signed on a house, but do want to try to be sure and keep the boat for as long as i can. thanks in advance everone. you can also email me at"

spdrcr616@hotmail.com

if that would be easier. i have a couple pics of the out drive but not sure how to post.
