General question about water pump replacement.

I have been waiting for the shop manual for my 1998 175 Rude, checked library and they have only the older manuals, and can wait no longer. I have done impellor and water housing replacements on numerous Mercurys and an electric shift rude. Is there any significant difference that would keep me from dropping the lower unit and doing this without the manual? It has been warm for two days and I can not resist the urge to work on the boat, especially with the replacement parts looking at me every time I sit down at my desk.

elark, I f you can piece it together from that thread, that would be good. I have done many mercs, but only one 1998 Johnny 150V6(identical to your motor). The Mercs are a bit different. You need to pull the clevis pin under the starboard lower carb, and push the shift linkage to the side to release the shift rod. Then drop the gearcase. You need to stick some orings into some grooves in the waterpump parts, and coat some gaskets with aviation sealer. The key locks into the driveshaft, to turn the impeller. Turn the driveshaft CCW to unlock the key.

In short, you might like to wait for the manual

WOW. After reading through that I guess I should wait for the manual. The water pump works fine, strong stream, but since I bought the motor (impellor was replaced with new lower unit) three years ago, I thought I better look at putting in a new one. While I wait I will just leave the old one in and fish as weather allows.

elark7, My water pressure gauge pegs (30+PSI) at high speed. This gives me an indication of the condition of the impeller and other parts. If you do not have a water pressure gauge, you might consider one. I swapped it with the tilt gauge, which was not too useful.

As long as it's working good , wait for the manual. Lots of good info in it.
