General Steering Question

Hi I posted this in the Steury Section before but it's not a very popular section, and am not even sure if it is boat-specific

I'm not sure if this is boat specific or not, but i have a 1972 Steury with an outboard 85hp Merc. I need some help with the steering system. The cable I have will work with the motor, but I'm confused. I need the threaded part to stay in place somewhere, so it will work. Heres a picture of it, and I'm assuming that part that helps the steering is where that extra hole is there. Where can I find that part? How does it work? I'm putting a boat together from just a hull and don't know what was there. Thanks a lot!

Re: General Steering Question

if the motor has the tilt tube with the threaded ends the cable rod goes thru the tilt tube and fastens, then you need the mercury steering link. if it do not have the tilt tube, you need the transom mount for the cable. or the thru hull mount. go to teleflex.com steering instructions. that will explain a lot.

this is a tilt tube type installation on a Johnson, merc is the same, except for an different link arm

Thank you for the quick response! do you have any more pics of that from the other side and such? I'll go check out the teleflex site now. Thanks again!

Do you need the linkages? Is there a piece that bolts onto the transom that could thread into that nut on the steering? And then the end of that cable could connect to the screw on the back of the motor to turn the motor?

Re: General Steering Question

AHHHHH i see it now. Sorry for the dumb questions. And i see the secondary picture now, i thot it was one big one at first. This will allow me to tilt the motor up for towing without any problem doing it this way too. Thanks for the help!
