I am looking for a replacement belt for the generator on a 1965 Johnson 40 HP outboard. Any suggestions?

Buy a battery charger instead. Before you buy another belt you might want to test the generator to make sure it works. The belt for my 75 hp is obsolete. Belt manufacturers make a belt with the same pitch and width but one with three more teeth and one with three less teeth than I need. It seems the belt was made for OMC. You can visit your local machine supply distributors and check the belt catalogs for something that matches. Do you have a broken belt for comparison?

Sea-Way Marine in Seattle has them. However, brace yourself they are about $50.00 bucks a pop.

Is your motor electric shift? If so, you want to fix the gen.

I have found a couple of belts through the internet so far (found them today). The belt that I have is missing most of the teeth, there are some left but belt is not broke yet. The generator is working fine at this time.

Yes it is an electric shift (unfortunately) rather have a manual shift.

Just need to keep it running for fishing.

Electric shift works good until you go across a fishing line floating on the surface, tangles in your prop, under the prop shaft seal and you loose shift capability. No forward, no reverse, and a paddle to get you back to the launch ramp. Since I have put on a 7.5 hp kicker and a bow mount trolling motor so not as bad now.

It is nice to have generator working to keep the 2 batteries charged.

It is all fun.

I may have a couple belts left in my remaining stock, however the alarm is set right now and I can't get at them.

Edit: Following day..... Checked. Sorry, I'm out of them.

Haven't had much luck finding a belt. I bit the bullet, so to speak, and the local marine shop is trying to order one for me. Hopefully they will have better luck than I have.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.
