That same generator talked about went out on me this weekend. It was running for about 2 hrs, we started the engines to come home and 10 minutes in it stopped. When you go and try to start it will run for about 10-11 sec. then shut off. If you try and restart right away it won't even run, wait 15 minutes, same thing 10-11 sec. then stops. I think it is the fuel pump?? any suggestions??

Re: generator fuel pump

When it doesn't start, does it have spark? If not, its an ignition problem. If you think its the fuel pump, do a pressure test, or disconnect the line at the carb and stick it into a container and crank the engine. If its pumping fuel, its probably not a fuel pump problem. Generators, like any other marine engine can suffer from clogged carb jets. Has it ever been cleaned? Have you removed the spark plug(s) to see if it/they are wet/dry. Wet = flooding due to sticky choke or inlet needle and seat not closing by the float. Dry = no fuel.

Re: generator fuel pump

most gensets run an electric pump. most have overtemp, low oil/oil pressure and high exhaust temp shut downs. time to see if ya lose spark when it dies. others run the fuel pump from a relay that stays energized by the genset output so if the genset quits the fuel pump will as well.
