Anyone know of a reason why I couldn't run a 1000w yamaha generator on my boat? We will be entering the Parade of Lights in Ventura Harbor and need the power for decorations.

Thanks

What kind of boat? If anyone is below deck, the fumes will settle there. If anchored and everyone else is running generators, the fumes will settle on the water around the boats. Carbon monoxide kills people. Be carefull. And remember that water and electricity do not mix. Add alcohol and you have a recipe for disaster.

I urge you to not take Upinsmoke's words lightly. Many have died sunning themselves on the transom platform outside of the boat with the gen set on for AC. That is not to say don't do it as many do but be overly vigilant.

If you are underway and the genny is downwind at all times, you have very little to worry about. Don't do anything boneheaded like put it in the engine room (no, the blower won't evacuate the CO) or put it in the cockpit or cabin. Strap it to the swimstep, keep the boat moving and all will be well. Good luck with your parade of lights, it sounds great!

One last alternative to consider. Use strings of LED lights and a cheap 50 or 75W inverter plugged into a 12V socket. LED xmas lights were pricey 2 years ago, now they're almost giveaways.

I did that last year at the Christmas sail-past. I loaded the boat with lights and strapped the genset to the swim platform. It worked great.
