GenII weird water leak

All ya'all ever see a water leak out around the upper gear case top cover - on muffs, on an Alpha1 GenII?

I know there are cooling passages around the upper gear case, but they shouldn't be able to leak out around the top cap. Should they? No water getting in the gear oil at all. Just dribbling out all around the cap. I pulled the leg tonight and everything is dry in the bellows and shifter slot.

I just completed a complete power package swap in my boat and was running the motor first time in the boat today on muffs. I swapped EVERYTHING, from transom, outdrive to the complete motor, going from a 3.0L to a 4.3L. This is my first time working on a GenII. And I went through pretty much every bit of maintenance on it possible without pulling gear sets. I saw nothing didn't look like new in the top when I pulled the cap to inspect input bearing.

Thanks for any thoughts. I'll pop the leg back on and run it tomorrow and gets pics of the leak if it seems out of normal.

I learned one thing yesterday. If you pinch the o-ring between the Y pipe and the gimbal housing you will be pulling your engine back out.

Engine comes out in less than an hour, and as glad as I am that it is a $6 o-ring and not a missed crack in the y-pipe or gimbal housing, still a PITA to pull a fresh install back out. After I installed the engine, while reading the transom install instructions I see where Merc recommends you glue that puppy in. Now I read that. Sheesh. Sure looked like a secure fit, but you cannot tell if it dislodges during y-pipe installation. Makes for a pretty drinking fountain inside the bilge.
