Re: Geocaching

Sure do.. Have like 75 finds. Lots of fun, great family time. Don't do it for the goodies, or you'll be sorely dissapointed, the challenge and the exercise is what it's all about.

-Roger

Sure sounds like littering to me. If I find one, I'm gonna throw it in the trash. :D :D

Re: Geocaching

si, I don't take anything though, can't find a use for a matchbox car :D ! You should know how to navigate to it without a GPS get a map and a compass and you will get your self to within 300 yards of it, then you can use your GPS to help narrow it down. Navigate back home with compass to! Or follow the trail you should of followed the first time.

Re: Geocaching

I entered a set of coordinates into my GPS and found out there is one within 4 miles of my house. I am going to give it a shot tomorrow, to see just how this new unit works.

Thanks for the link jsfinn

Re: Geocaching

OK, So I have the coordinates in my GPS and I head out. The thing worked great, put me right on the stash in the woods. What I found was an WW2 ammo can up against a tree all coverd with sticks and leaves and stuff. Inside was a bunch of stuff all sealed in plastic bags, not really anything great just some junky kind of stuff but I did not expect anything good, I left everything as it was.

It was fun to do. This spring I figure I will stash my own and post it. What I am thinking is tying something to a tree branch overhanging the lake, that ought to stump some people :D

Flathead, What brand/model GPS do you have? I am looking for the lowest priced one that works well.If there is such a thing.

Re: Geocaching

OMC, This is my first GPS. It was a gift from my wife for Christmas. Magellan sporttrack map. So far it seems as though it will do everything I want it to do. I have heard some bad things about the street-mapping software that is available for the magellan, but they are supposed to come out with new, more accurate mapping software soon.
Cost was somewhere around 200$

The reason we went with the magellan is the fact that radioshack carries them, I have a 100$ voucher coming from radio shack from something else I purchased, and figured I would use it to by the software for the unit.

Look at the garmin line.

I have the garming E-Trex legend......has the US highways (most of them at least) and the waterways...

It is around $200 or so....can load additional maps in it, etc.....Great handheld GPS unit.

Re: Geocaching

I just started Geocaching and it's great fun! I'm already planning on stashing some caches down in the Northern Neck that are accessible best by boat (power and/or kayak).

I found 3 just yesterday! It's a great way to combine playing with the computer, playing with your GPS and actually getting OUTSIDE!

It's great fun for the kiddies too but like CCrew said... Don't do it for the goodies. The adventure and the find are the fun part.

CastawayRay... There are LOTS of caches that you can find right alongside the road, alongside some of the most popular bicycle routes and also on some of the smallest creeks and streams. I've already found a couple of new fishing holes while I was out "caching."

Re: Geocaching

I started caching this last summer. Great way to hone your gps skills, and get some exercise. My SporTrak Pro gets me within thirty feet max, and often takes me to within a foot. Even found out that Cy Young is buried not far from my home from geocaching. I do it at night, with just the coords. Now that is an adventure!

If you venture into the forum there, be prepared for much hostillity. Those folks don't agree on anything.

-Spiker

Re: Geocaching

Way cool! Checked it out - about 8 caches close by. Wish I had time before leaving for Ghana. Maybe this summer when I return. DOn't have a GPS, but from the hints and clues, and a compass, I am sure I will be able to find them!
