Hey guys, I'm going to be sanding down the old paint on my boat (it was has a brushed on coat as well as the original). I don't really want to sand it down to the bare aluminum... what are good primers and paints to use when going over old paint?

thanks a ton!

....if there is old paint, can I sand it lightly, zinc chromate prime over then paint?

again I'm hesitant to paint over the old paint before I know that there is a method of doing such...

thanks again!!!

Depends. Painting over old paint is always risky. Paint needs to have a compatible base to adhere to. You will definetly need to primer the entire boat with the recommended primer for the final color coat of the paint you choose to use. You are correct that any bare aluminum needs to have ZC treatment. I'd recommend the entire boat be sanded first with 60 grit and work your way up to 180 grit. ZC all bare spots then 2 coats of the recommended primer. Do you know what paint you are going to use?

Ayuh,... So long as it's holdin' well,...

Sand it Smooth, 'n lay down some Rustoleum enamel, of the color of yer choice...

2nd coat it if necessary....
Or grey primer it for a solid color background...

I started sanding my boat this morning with an electric power sander and 60 gritt paper, its just original paint but i found that it went to bare metal super easy so once u start sanding u might find it pretty easy to go bare metal, my thread is called 1982 crestliner i got for free theres pics on page 6 of the sanding

The old paint seems to be hold really well. I was thinking of using easypoxy right over it, didn't think I needed to prime - apparently it has great masking attributes. The only thing was I read lots of good about it, but one person hated it which has made me hesitant. I've heard that rustoleum is great with hardners added??? but other say rustoleum is junk.... it's a big decision and i want to make the right one... so I'm going to sand down the old paint and wherever there is bare aluminum i will ZC spray it.... then (primer over top if necessary?) then the scary choice of making a paint decision.... anybody use that easypoxy topcoat? hows does a one part poly urethane compare in durability to say rustoleom... etc...?

thanks a lot!
