Hey guys, 86 johnson 25 hp, this is my last task at hand before i put everything together and give her a whirl around my local lake. From the pdf drawings it looks like i have to remove all 8 crankcase bolts (The big black ones about an inch deeper than the front smaller bolts) seen in this picture to get to the thermostat, is this correct?
I uploaded images, if anyone knows which bolts need to come off please let me know. thank you very much. The second picture shows where the telltale goes into.

All you have to do is remove the smaller bolts to remove the cyl head cover which will give you access to the thermo. The bigger ones are for the cyl head.

just the smaller ones <hopefully > the cylinder head cover bolts...I say hopefully because they can be difficult if this is a saltwater motor..heat may be required...you'll need to replace the cover gasket as well...worst case , you can remove the head then the cover bolts
