Getting a boat detailed

As I just purchased my first boat and have no time to get it looking sharp I am thinking of hiring someone to detail it. It is pretty badly oxidized. It is a 25' SeaRay. I got a quote of $400 to buff it out, clean it inside and out and shampoo the carpets. Is this a fair price? I'm waiting for them to call back so I can ask how they plan on handling the oxidization problem. Thanks.

I have a 22 foot sunrunner. Just bought the boat. I paid 18 dollars a foot to have it done inside and out. Came out great.

Adam

Yes, it is a dancer. Haven't taken delivery yet as I've been swamped at work and the dealer was waiting on a part. Just thought it would be MUCH more pleasureable to get a polished up boat upon arrival so I can just start enjoying it right away.

Probably about right +/- $75. Nothing better than a nice shiney boat but the exploration of a new (used) boat is also rewarding.

don't expect the world when you get it detailed. Many times the gelcoat is so old and oxidized that the shine will only last for one month.

Hey Westwind Cuz here again. If your not used to driving a boat this large I'd suggest taking it out on a few test runs before you go anywhere too far.It handles alot diferent than a runabout and you have to get used to the tabs.Read Briano's post regarding problems with searay trim tabs,..Brig a cooler If your going out for awhile!! the built in ice box only holds 2 bottles of wine +8 bottles of bottles of beer. With 2 couples on board(I'm asumming the guys are drinking beer)you'll run out beer in no time on a hot afternoon.

:D Jim

Is the price quoted for the hull only or does it include the topsides/cabinhouse also? If it does, then $400 may be too cheap. If he knows what he is doing and does good work, then that price is a bargain IMO. I would check out work he has done on other boats and make sure you are in agreement on what you are getting.

Cuz, Thanks for the advice. The truth is I'm not used to running any boat! I plan on taking it easy for a bit. Safety classes start Monday.

I spoke with the detailer today. He said he is going to compund and wax the entire boat as well as clean the cabin and seats. Shampooing the carpet as well. To really get the boat back to "new" gloss he said it needed to be wet sanded as it is heavily oxidized. That would have run around $1,500. Looks like I have some fall work to look forward to!
