Getting a boat ready for salt water?

What all needs to be done to a boat if it will only be in salt water for no more than 2 weeks? I would like to go to the Bimini islands next year but would like to get the boat ready over the winter. I know about all the safety things, I just need to know what the boat needs. The boat is stored on a trailer and only sees freshwater other than this trip.

Run fresh water through the motor after usage.

So thats all I need? Just drop it in the lake for a bit when I get back. Do I need to clean the hull with anything special? My boat had bottom paint at one point, but it needs to be redone. I know that I don't need it being stored on a trailer, but it would look much better if it was done agian. Do you think it would help out any.

The bottom paint is to prevent barnacles.
Unless you're running in brackish water, this should not be an issue for you.
A boat w/o bottom paint is more desirable indicating that it did not "live" in the water.
Just hose off the hull when done.
Of course you have time to put a nice coat of wax on.

Yea, just a good flushing when you get home...2 weeks isnt enough time for any type of major modifications , but the wax thing is good, also zincs, other than that....have fun.

As long as you use it, and don't let it just sit still for 2 wks, plus using the previous posters good advice, you will be just fine.

In addition to running water though the motor and washing the hull, you need to spray the springs, hubs, and axle down on the trailer. Alot of people overlook this and I've experienced the results. Especially if this is the only time you plan to dip it in slat water- you wouldn't want a freshwater trailer rotting like all the salt water ones. If it is an outboard, you'll want to wash down ALL areas exposed to salt water.
I had an abused mariner outboard whose pivot steering bracket that runs paralel to the midsection decayed to almost nothing before it was replaced. Powerhead had to be pullled briefly. If that part had dissapeared, my motor would have been hanging on by the control cables. It was a great motor, clean, flushed every time, but no one ever paid attention to the harder to see exterior parts. I noticed only months later. Cover all your bases and have fun.

Besides the internal engine actions -- you will have salt spray on all the external areas. Buy SALT AWAY -- and follow directions -- spray it - and wipe it off all the salty areas -- particularily metal fittings and such -- it does work -- and will prevent rusty streaks some time later --
