I have a spare alpha drive and want to get it to bare aluminun to give it a perfect prime and paint job.I have new decals and want the spare to look like a new drive.I tried chemical stripper and it takes forever.Sanding wont get everywhere.I am considering taking it to be sand blasted.Any suggestions???Charlie

Yes, glass beading is similar to sand blasting.

The more modern term is media blasting.
Usually silica sand (not so much any more because of silicosis) or some other cutting medium like "Tuff Kut" is used and is quite abrasive. Because the leg is made from aluminum using a medium such as sand or tuff kut will eat away at the aluminum.

Using a milder medium like glass beads, walnut shells or some of the plastic type medium will take off the paint and oxidation but will not blast off any aluminum.

Before doing this make sure to tape off "ALL" openings and holes. You do not want the media, whatever you use, inside the leg.

Hope this helps.

Jeff

My experience with blasting is to use plastic beads to remove paint then glass on any exposed corrosion. Do a very good taping job. I'm repainting my drive right now and don't have any access to a blaster anymore. I'm having fairly good luck using a small prybar as a scraper before sanding to bare metal (or just a little bit of primer).
