96 baylinder capri 1850. I only gutted the main cabin floor and some of the rear bench. The front bow and windshield are was fine. I do however, have a couple of questions.
1. There are a few areas where the old floor will meet the new floor. how far down do i want to sand the "old" floor edges to be able to glass the new floor to it? Do i just skim the top of the glass, or get down to the wood?
2. My captains chairs were basically just another layer of plywood laminated to the top of the deck. What is the process for recreating that? I was thinking i put the floor in and then come back and add another layer of plywood for the seat...but do i put down fiberglass first...just resin...? hoping someone with similar set up can clear that up for me.
3. The span between my gas tank stringers is about 30"...which is a lot for a piece of plywood. The old stuff was so messed up i couldn't really tell what was going on underneath there. It seemed like there were two layers of plywood over the gas tank. Should I laminate another piece of plywood to strengthen that area over the tank.
4. My old floor was 1/2 ply..i think...it measures to exactly 1/2" thick. I would assume I want to beef up to 5/8?
5. What do you guys use to sand down fiberglass. I've got a 4.5" grinder. There is a ring of fiberglass around the edge of the interior of the boat where the old floor was attached that i need to get rid of. what grit do i use?
Thanks for the help so far. The more i tackle this project the more frustrated i get with how much work it is. I keep telling myself its just a boat and if its not perfect....its not the end of the world.
