What is the easiest way to get out of the water. If you go slow you can't get up and to fast fall forward. He seems to be crunched into a ball when starting out. Should he open up more like on skis?

He should stay crunched in a ball with his butt on his heals until the boat is up to speed. There is no problem staying down too long. A person could ride like that all day. If you stand up too early the board will sink and you fall on your face. Normally a rider on a wakeboard will get up easier than a skier. The driver should launch like they do with a person on two skis. A smooth steady throttle increase, then pull back when the boat is up to speed.
For a new rider start with a speed of about 12-14 mph so they can get used to riding and sliding the board behind the boat and inside the wake.

Have him watch a couple of the "how to get up on a wakeboard" videos on Youtube. Helps A LOT when you can visualize how to do it correctly and becomes very easy once you know what to do with your body.

for the driver: start at idle speed going forward. You want the rope to be tight and the boarder should be able to hang on in position at this speed no problem. Then romp on it, a smooth but fast acceleration will help pop the boarder up and out instead of being dragged through the water at lower speeds.

For the boarder: start in the "sitting on the toilet" position. Keep your arms/elbows around the outside of your knees to keep from being pulled over the top. Don't try to turn or stand up, stay crouched and keep your hands low. It's better to wait too long to stand up then to try too fast. Once up to speed you will naturally push a foot forward and make the turn effortlessly. Still don't just stand straight up, keep your wait on your back foot until you get comfortable.
