Hi all, I had a quick question regarding the spring tune up. First the particulars-

The boat make and model- I don't know, the best I can come up with on the registration is that it's a 1977-78 Grand Mariner II (what ever that is, I've never heard of this boat company (for smaller boats 17.5 ft. tri-hull)

The motor/outdrive- I have a stern drive model AQ190 (Ford 302 V8 with a Volvo Penta 270 outdrive)

The question- I live in Northern California- in the valley where it doesn't freeze very often during winter, I have kept my boat in the garage since I've own it. So, because there's no windchill factor in the garage, it hasn't hit 32 degrees, possibly 38-39 degrees at the coldest. So, would I still have to change the oil? It would just suck, because I just did an oil change towards the end of the season, of course I still will though. Last Sunday I got it out of the garage, checked the oil in the motor and outdrive, both looked like brand new oil still, I prayed silently (three privious years of doing nothing bust shelling out $$$ for repairs and new parts) and I fired it up. Baby sounded great!!! With a low smooth idle. I let it run for about 20 min. for the electrical system to get a new charge then shut it down.

So, sorry for the long post, I just want to finally be able to use the boat and have it running the way it should with proper preventative maint.

So, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thank you and I hope everyone has a great and safe season ahead. Krazylegs

Ayuh,.... Changin' the oil's got nothin' to do with sittin', nor freezin' temps...

Changin' the oil, is only to supply clean oil,....

If it's not Time, 'n it looks clean, don't worry 'bout it, til it's Time, or looks dirty...

Just so you know, wind chill doesn't freeze anything. If the temp is above freezing and the wind is blowing, it may feel colder on your skin, but it won't freeze the boat.......

So, because there's no windchill factor in the garage, it hasn't hit 32 degrees, possibly 38-39 degrees at the coldest.

FYI, windchill is an apparent, or perceived value, that applies only to exposed skin. If the temp is 38 deg and the wind is blowing 50 mph, the temp of exposed metal, fiberglass and any other inanimate object is still 38 degrees.

Like Bond-o said, ambient temperature has nothing to do with needing to change the oil.
