I have recently gotten a 1994 15 foot Gheenoe.

It has a HP rating up to 10 hp.

Should I just look for 8-10 hp outboards or can I get by with something like 6 hp?

I will mostly be fishing lakes from 200-700 acres.

I'm not familiar with that boat, but if its only rated 10 hp then a 6 hp should be ok. Might be a little underpowered if you load the boat up.

That is a displacement hull. Six HP should move it well.

Re: Gheenoe Motor

My friend has a 9.9 Merc on his and it gets up on plane and goes about 15mph with two guys in the boat.

Gheenoe's own pamphlet shows them running a 25 on one, with a disclaimer that they did that on their own test boat and never exceed the maximum CG horsepower.

I saw a bunch of them running OMC and Merc's in the 20-25 range in central FL a couple years back, those river rats would just fly down river, you'd hear them coming around a bend and hear the sound when one would kick up over a log and keep on going.

they do seem like fun little boats. i see them regularly here(central fl) with up to 25 HP's. normally with 2 people with lotsa gear and still planed up and haulin arse.

25 hp johnson on ebay now stuck to the back of a gheenoe. would be a fun package.
