Gimbal Bearing Grease Seal

When removing a gimbal bearing on a mercruiser alpha one, is it typical that the grease seal gets replaced at the same time? Just wondering how the jaw puller can get behind the bearing without damaging the grease seal.

I think there is some clearance behind the bearing, before the seal. I would just replace the seal anyway while you're in there. Just my opinion.
