Re: Gimbal bearing grease

since mercruiser makes a specific grease called, mercruiser gimble brg. and ujoint grease. that's what i use. i don't know the particulars about greases but figure there must be a reason they make a specific kind. so i use it.. specially since the gimble brg. is such an important part it seems..
in looking at it. it don't appear to be similar to regular marine greases that i've seen.. just my 2 cent..

Re: Gimbal bearing grease

Call me a cinic, but I've always viewed most OEM items such as lube and trinkets as the OEMs way of saying "Buy this 99 cent part from us for $10, because the 99 cent stuff is soooo much lower quality".. all while I envision them scratching off the label of the 99 cent part and replacing it with their own.

Who knows, maybe I have a gimball bearing replacement in my future.. or maybe it'll last every bit as long or longer.

Re: Gimbal bearing grease

Due to the relatively severe service, I've always looked at the gimbal bearing and u-joints grease along with the spline grease as something that I shouldn't be budget minded about, so I use the recommended grease.

yes i agree to this for most aspects. however there are some items in which should be replaced OEM. Grease just isnt one of them...

at the marine store it was 21$ for 3 of the mini tubes (mercruiser gimbal and u joint grease)

i went to NAPA and got 3$ standard size tube of thick universal marine grade grease.

Re: Gimbal bearing grease

I cant tell you where I read it, nor do I know if it is true... but I remember reading that the correct grease allows the bearing rollers to actually roll instead of sliding. But I suspect that any grease will do. Hopefully this will not turn into another "oil thread."
