my friend has a mercruiser 140 in which the hole which the gimbal bearing is installed is corroded. Is there a sleeve replacement or is this a large part replacement?

Don S ... have you heard any longevity reports on this product? I see that it came out 2000/2001 and has a one year warranty.

Has anyone used this product?

BigD

Re: Gimbal bearing housing?

I had a similiar problem, the lip where the drive bellows attaches was badly corroded. Is that where yours is bad? Or is it at the gimbal bearing itself? I looked into the kit that Don linked to, but decided for that kind of money I would keep looking at alternatives. (That kit fixes the lip area for the drive bellows, not the gimbal bearing area).

Anyway, I wound up buying a nice used complete transom assembly off of ebay from a fresh water boat for about the same money I would have spent on the kit.

Re: Gimbal bearing housing?

I was just lookin' around for a used gimble housing for this boat, but not sure which Mercruiser outdrive it runs. It looks like a 1985 model Galaxie with engine and outdrive started production in 1984. Engine is 3.0 140 hp. Maybe 189 engine? Closest I can find for outdrive is alph 1 R-series.

Any one heard of this one and is it still available in used parts? Looks like Galaxie was in business only from 1972 to 1990.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Gimbal bearing housing?

We are not talking about main bearings here. The crush ring(corogated metal) that comes with any replacement gimbal bearing should take care of any minor to medium corrosion issues. If the gimbal housing is so bad that the crush ring would still allow the gimbal bearing to slip, then it is time for a new housing....in my opinion.
