Gimbal Bearing Oops

My Alpha One (1988) shelled out a few weeks ago and I bought a replacement drive. After dropping the old drive and inspecting the transom, I decided to go ahead and service all the other bits and pieces inside the gimbal and bell housings. After pulling the old gimbal bearing and seal, I attempted to install the new bearing (the new style, without the grease hole). While tapping the new bearing in, I mis-hit it along the race and shifted it inside the carrier. I'm assuming this new bearing is now shot and needs to be replaced, or does it?

Also, if anyone has installed this new-style, sealed bearing; I'd appreciate any tips. i.e. do the slots face forward or aft, vertical or horizontal? I've seen conflicting reports on how to install these new bearings, but it seems that it really doesn't matter now that there's no grease hole.

I also read that the old grease seal isn't required any longer, but it seems to me it would still serve the purpose of keeping other undesirables from entering behind the bearing.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: Gimbal Bearing Oops

Might be shot if you didnt use the correct driver on the tolerance ring.a mis hit may have only shifted it in the ring and that can be corrected with an alignment bar. The way I read the post is that you used some type of drift to tap it in. slots dont matter but is ir recommended to face them in.
