Gimbal Bearing Question

Just a question. What does the serrated ring on the Bearing/Tolerance ring do? Why is it there? Seams the pressed fit of the bearing OD would force grease around the bearing. Just wondering. Not planning to remove it.

The tolerance ring provides a consistent press fit with mfg. size variations in the transom plate bore and the aluminum carrier diameter. It's similar to a radial crush ring.

Thanks, Makes sense. I measured the OD of carrier ring and see .002' variance.
