Gimbal bearing questions..

Hey all,
I have two questions:
on my alpha one gen 2 drive I just did a gimbal and bellows job..
1. I installed the gimbal bearing with the slots facing towards the boat. Is that correct? It's a greaseable version btw.
2. I lined up the bearing housing grease hole and drive grease hole, but when I pumped in grease I only saw the grease come out around the housing.
is that normal because the grease flows around the tolerance ring?

Already made a trip out and it didn't self destruct... so must be half right.

thanks again guys.

1. So long as the drive went in by hand, no pounding your good

2. Was the tolerance ring on the outside of the outer race?

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... The slots don't care which way they're facin',.....

The bearin' is symmetrical, don't matter,....

I grease mine with the motor idlin',..... Donno if it helps, but I know it don't hurt,....

Grease-able gimbel bearin's are gettin' harder to find, with all the new non-grease-able ones out there,....

Yes went in by hand, and the tolerance ring was on the outside of the bearings outer race and I made sure the tolerance ring opening lined up with the grease hole.

thanks

Thanks, just what I wanted to hear. I was thinking about greasing that way, makes sense. Any evidence of the non grease ables failing prematurely/ lasting longer?

Sorry to say, but Think your going to need to replace your transom assembly. It should take an installation tool and a hammer to install. Most take a slide hammer or screw puller to remove.

Being able to install by hand says the aluminum housing that holds the bearing race has been damaged

if you can put it in by hand, at a minimum clean everything, then use loc-tite 680.

Thanks for the response, but that's my bad I should have been more clear when I responded to you, the *drive* went in my hand, the bearing definetly was a "press" fit. Haha sorry for the confusion.

Something isn't right, you should see grease come out between outer race and bearing, (the slots)

That's what I thought! It was just oozing out near the grease hole around the outer race, maybe it was already packed full or a tight tolerance somewhere and went the path of least resistance? I will grease it up some more and run it and see what happens?
