Can't get it out. Tried the rotate it sideways technique. It rotated a little ways and then stopped hard. Would rotate the other way either.
Does this technique work on VP SX-M's? I don't have a slide hammer gear puller. (or any gear puller for that matter) When I stick my finger through the bearing, it doesn't feel like there is anywhere for the pullers jaws to grab onto.

Ayuh,....

That Technique doesn't work for Any outdrive....
You only replace 1/2 of the bearing doing that......

To Build your own cobbed up Puller,....

Get a 1/2" piece of Redirod(threaded rod), a couple of Nuts,+ some Washers...
Of the Washers, you'll need some that will NOT fit thru the bearings center....
That's all it takes to build the "Slide" part of a Slide Hammer Puller....
For the other 1/2,...
The Head of a BFH, Without it's handle, works Great....

Otherwise, you need a Weight, 20lbs. is a Good 1,10lbs. will work, that can be slipped onto the Redirod,+ then put a Nut,+ Washer on the end....

Slip the Other end of the Redirod thru the Bearing, add the Big Washers,+ a Nut....
Inside the boat of course,...

Then Pound away,.... It'll come out....

A lot of auto parts stores rents out slide hammers, or even tool rental stores.
You also need an installer of some kind to install the new bearing, then you MUST have an alignment bar to align the gimbal bearing back to the coupler.

Bond-o,
That's a great idea. Can't believe i didn't think of it.

Don,

thats the route i went. didn't even cost me at the local o'riley's. a fully refundable deposit with return of the intact tool. a middle of the line weight (5.5 lbs maybe, can't rember) 3 jaw inside puller. worked real good. couple a test slams, 2 or three real slams and it was out. don't just do the brg.

The rotate it sideways technique won't work on the Volvo Penta because the beaing hits the shaft seal that is installed in front of it. You may have damaged the seal by trying to rotate it.

I'm sure I toasted the seal. I thought I read somewhere thet it isn't needed. Is that true?

Re: Gimbal Bearing Removal Problems

If it wasn't necessary Volvo wouldn't put them in. It keeps moisture out of the gimble bearing and also keeps excess gimble bearing grease from just roling down the inside of the transom.
