Gimbal Bearing Removal Woes.

Hi, all. So, I was having quite the time trying to remove my gimbal bearing. I tried the old bearingnpuller/ slide hammer combo to no avail. It just wouldn’t budge. Finally I gave in a bought. Tools for the job. Though that eventually worked, it felt much harder than it should have.

When end I tried to install the new bearing, it seemed to not want to go in. I pulled it back out and noticed that the corrugated metal collar that goes around the bearing was slipping off and jamming the bearing up.

Upon inspecting the old bearing, the corrugated collar was super loose as if it were also jammed inside while removing the bearing. I felt the inside of the transom assembly where the bearing assembly goes and it seems to be scared up from pulling the old bearing out/jamming the new one in.

It’s not much but it’l creates a lip on the inside of the shaft that catches the collar as the bearing goes in, preventing me from installing a new bearing.

I’m thinking I could probably smooth that out with a dremel but thought I’d ask for advice here first. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

A 2003 Gen II, unless it's had water in it should come out reasonably easily. There will be ridges in the housing where the previous tolerance ring (that's the corrugated bit) was in contact... Thta's normal. About the only thing that will cause them to be hard to get in or out is try to pull (or drive) them cocked....

I would be hesitant to use a dremel, be really easy to make a loose fit.Maybe if in tiny spots. I'd rather use a little emory clothe and go easy.

Next time you install, stick the gimbal in a below zero freezer and let it get cold and shrink a bit.
